Dear Holy Name of Mary Families,

Happy Feast Day! On September 12, the Church celebrates the feast of the Most Holy Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This feast teaches us how useful and advantageous it is to invoke her holy name in our needs. The name Mary, by which we honor the Most Blessed Virgin means "Star of the Sea". It is, says Saint Bernard, very well given to her, because she is indeed a star which enlightens, guides, and leads us to a harbor in the stormy sea of this world.

Welcome to the 2016 – 2017 School Year! We are off to a great start. Thank you to all the parents/guardians that visited HNOM on “Back to School Night”. We are a partnership and we appreciate your support. Thank you to Mrs. Carey for arranging a breakfast with the principal and parents on Friday morning where a lot was discussed and our new Nursery and Pre-K parents received support, as they left their children, in the very capable hands of our teachers, for the first time.

On Friday morning, we participated in a memorial service commemorating the 15 th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. When the students went back to their classrooms, they wrote cards and notes of appreciation to the first responders in our area who serve and protect us daily.

It is always exciting to start a new school year, filled with new adventures and challenges. I look forward to sharing this year with all of you; working to continue the tradition of academic excellence and spiritual growth.

Some things to look forward to in the month of September:

 Opening of school Mass – 8 th grade pin ceremony – Wednesday, September 14 at 10:00 am in the church

 The first PTL meeting, Wednesday, September 14 at 5:30 pm in the Cafeteria

 8th grade car wash – Saturday, September 17 from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm at Hendrickson Park, 123 West Merrick Road, Valley Stream

 National Junior Honor Society Inductions – Tuesday, September 20, at 7:00 pm in the gym

All are welcome!

My door is always open. Please come and see me with any concerns or questions you may have, I am here to help!

Yours in Christ,

Mrs. Pamela Sanders

Dear Holy Name of Mary Parents and Students,

Welcome back! What a blessing it is to begin the 2016/2017 school year! I am excited to return and be of service to you and your children. The virtue that we will be fostering this year is patience. The bible verse we will use to promote the virtue of patience is Eph 4:1 – 3 “I therefore, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit, in the bond of peace.”  I hope all of you have had a safe and restful summer vacation and that you are looking forward to the upcoming school year as much as we are.  School begins Tuesday, September 6, 2016. Students in grades 1 – 8 will be dismissed at 11:30 on the 6th and 7th. Full days begin on the 8th.  Supply lists and uniform requirements can be found on our web page:www.hnomschool.org

As we begin the 2016-2017 school year, we welcome some new faces to our faculty:  Miss Meghan Galgano will teach grade 2, Miss Jessica Peet will teach Pre-K, Mrs. Kristen Hayes will move to Kindergarten (due to a large kindergarten enrollment we have opened a second class) and Mrs. Maria Murphy will teach Spanish.

Everyone has been working hard this summer to prepare for the new school year. Please make sure to save the date for our “Grades 1 – 8 Back to School Night” Thursday, September 8 at 7:00 pm.  This night will be packed with information on what is happening in the school as a whole, and in the individual classes.

One of the main goals of Holy Name of Mary this year is to continue to improve communication between school and home. We will be making a concerted effort to inform parents and community members about all the great things that are happening within our walls. The use of technology will be key to assisting us in achieving this goal. The main vehicle we will be using to convey information to you is our school web page. The teacher’s class pages will be filled with information about all the “happenings” in the classroom. When looking at our school calendar, be sure to click on "more events" to see all events for that day.

Early Childhood Orientation (Nursery, Pre-K and Kindergarten) will take place on Tuesday, September 6, at 7:00 pm, in the cafeteria.

We hope you’ll be an active partner with us, whether you choose to work with our school’s parent league, volunteer at the school, or take part in special events. Thank you for your investment in, and continued support of your child’s Catholic Education.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Pamela Sanders

Dear Holy Name of Mary School Families,

As the 2015-2016 School Year comes to an end, I want to take a moment to say thank you. Thank you to all our students for working hard and for being kind! Thank you to all our parents and families who support Holy Name of Mary by giving of their time, talent and treasure. Thank you to our PTL board and to our School Board for organizing our fund and fun raisers.

I am also most grateful for the prayers and the words of consolation offered to me by so many of you when my mother passed away in March. I was overwhelmed by your compassion. Please continue to keep my in your prayers.  I am happy and proud to be a part of the HNOM family and I look forward to sharing new social, academic and faith filled experiences next year.  A few things to look forward to are:

  •  New Smart Boards
  • An Updated Student/Parent Handbook
  • New Technology
  • New “Fun” raisers

2016-2017 is going to be a great year!  School begins on September 6 for grades 1-8. The calendar is available on the website and new information is added frequently.  Watch for Summer and Fall updates.

I wish all our graduates much success as they move on to High School. Please keep me informed of their accomplishments and experiences.  I will keep each one of them in my prayers.

When you are vacationing this summer, on Long Island or away, please send HNOM a postcard. I will hang them up in the school and we can all share our summer experiences in September.

Encourage your children to complete the summer packet they received with their Assessment Card. This information is also on their teacher’s page on our website. The packets help prepare the children for next year.

There are always new adventures to be had and new experiences to share. Learn something new this summer.  Most importantly, pray, play and make wonderful memories together!

In Christ I Remain,

Mrs. Pamela Sanders
