Using their Chromebooks, 8th graders conducted military research to share an uplifting fact about the United States armed forces with a veteran in HNOM School's annual "Valentines for Veterans" project. During Wednesday's "Celebrate Your Nation" day for Catholic Schools Week, 8th graders practiced finding credible sources online, accurately punctuating the titles of websites, integrating research through transitional phrases, and maintaining a professional tone with precise salutation and closing choices in their friendly-letter formats. The meaningful review enabled students to learn about positive and inspiring initiatives and history within the United States armed forces. For example, 8th graders were amazed to discover the long history of presidential military service!
After researching and rewriting their friendly letter draft onto yellow and pink construction paper, 8th graders created punny cover art with glitter, heart stickers, and frog cut-outs. Greetings - like "HOPPY Valentine's Day!" and "Have an Un-FROG-ettable Valentine's Day!" - brightened the covers and complemented the glittery embellishments on their cards!
