As a hands-on extension of E.L.A. learning standard 8L5a, 8th graders created D.I.Y. pun costumes for Halloween! With creativity and thoughtfulness, students played on multiple-meaning words or similar-sounding words and brought a pun to life with attire and accessories. Upbeat, modern designs shined in costumes like Social Butterfly, Miss Universe, and Life of the Party. Homemade shirts took many costumes - like the Queen Bee, Ivy League, Brownie/Brown-E, and Mug Shot - to the next level!
After an anonymous class vote through a Google Forms ballot, Burger King and Candy (W)rapper won best costumes! Congratulations Andrew and Sophia!
But EVERYONE did a phenomenal job crafting! Our "POE-TO" Booth allowed students to pose for a photo with some punny headstones - like Barry D. Live and Pearl E. Gates! Check out the awesome costume designs below!

8th graders also enjoyed some snacks - which were made seasonal through puns! Such an easy, but effective, marketing strategy! Word play on similar-sounding words created the following spooky puns: "Ghoul-Aid" sounds like "Kool-Aid;" "X-Scream" sounds like "extreme;" and "Boo Berry" sounds like "blueberry"!
Througout the day's activities, the pale-blue "vulture eye" of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" kept popping up - maybe even often enough to drive someone mad! There were inflatable eyeballs to decorate the "POE-TO Booth," eyeball glasses, numbered eyeballs for random group assignment, eye gumballs for game prizes, and eyeball sticks for a "The Tell-Tale Heart" literary device relay.
8th graders also participated in Halloween pun activities, like a Halloween Touch & Feel Game with ORGAN-ICKS Slime in the "Boo-nana Skream Pi" and "Slimeghetti and Muckballs" varieties. Several 8th graders blindly reached into a goopy sludge of rubbery mix-ins that were just creepy enough for them to wonder if they were really touching something awful!
