With the challenge of staying within Della's $2 spending cap from O. Henry's short story, "The Gift of the Magi," to purchase a holiday gift for a classmate and to understand one of the main themes in the story - that the value of a gift is its thoughtfulness, not its monetary worth - 8th graders opened their gifts and guessed the identity of their "Mystery Magi"! From vanilla wafers, a Mickey Mouse puzzle, and a crumbled $1 bill, some gifts were humorous and reflected the light-hearted, friendly student dynamics in the class. However, a homemade glass jar with dance embellishments and a personalized name tag easily won for the most thoughtful "Mystery Magi" gift. Squishy balls and light-up, mini footballs captured students' attention the most after the flurry of wrapping paper concluded.
