What is a Literary Magazine?
A literary magazine is a periodical composed of different types of fiction, including poetry, short stories, art, etc. At HNOM School, it is an annual publication that is written and produced by students. -

Overview
Started in the 2018-2019 academic year, INKED is an after-school creative writing club for middle school students in Grades 6-8. Students develop their narrative writing skills through storytelling games, mini-lessons and graphic organizers based around the 6+1 Writing Traits, peer editing, and teacher feedback through individual writing conferences.
Storytelling games help students generate story ideas and brainstorm logical plot developments as they build upon other's ideas through collaborative storytelling. The games also strengthen memory and active listening skills as they often challenge students to retell the impromptu, collective stories. To increase engagement with the club's written tasks (which range from quick writes to multi-page story drafts), students can choose from a variety of writing utensils and stationery!
In the after-school club, students explore and write different story genres, experiment with various narrative techniques, and cycle through the writing process to publish an annual literary magazine.

Fun Facts!
"Each species of cephalopod produces slightly differently colored inks; generally, octopuses produce black ink, squid ink is blue-black, and cuttlefish ink is a shade of brown."
← INKED club members sign a copy of Maggie Tokuda-Hall's picture book, Also an Octopus, at the end of each academic year! It is a meta-cognitive story about the writing process that reminds readers that all stories start with nothing - and then brainstorms and adds basic story elements in a humorous attempt to overcome that "blank canvas"!
