Not only did two 8th grade students appeal to their English teacher through octopuses (her favorite animal) and puns, they made Ms. Brown tremendously proud as their self-initiated National Teachers Day emails and art showed that they applied the life lessons at work in her classroom, as well. The 8th grade sisters sent Ms. Brown - their English and homeroom teacher - unexpected emails on National Teachers Day. Their notes of gratitude recognized class events and assignments they found special and included photographs of their original artwork that wished their teacher a "Happy National Teachers Day."
Throughout the last three years, Ms. Brown made it a priority to have her homeroom students celebrate the National Appreciation Days that apply to schools through various - often pun-filled - projects. She hoped it would encourage kids to see the importance and meaningfulness of acknowledging and recognizing the people in our lives who do right by us and help us - enough so that they would carry that value with them upon leaving her classroom. That hope reveals why this self-initiated gesture by the 8th graders meant so much and instilled so much pride. Thank you, Sophia and Soraya, or applying - on your own - the life lessons our English curriculum has strived to encourage!
