To review 8th grade's figurative language specialty - puns! - students created "Valentines for Veterans" to convey a simple - but powerful - message to Veterans: "We whaley appreciate your military service!" On "Celebrate Your Nation Day" of Catholic Schools Week, 8th graders expressed gratitude to former military men and women. In their cards, they also briefly shared their hobbies, interests, and families with veterans to acknowledge and showcase how much good in their lives is made possible by our country's brave freedom fighters.
Since they created whale puns to pair with bold and blue die-cut whale shapes, students secretly hope their cards will make their way to those who have served in the navy. To arrange a creative cover for their cards, 8th graders created scenes in which whales sprayed a shower of hearts and whales swam on a bubbling sea of hearts.
The cards' cover messages featured an array of whale puns, such as "Whale you be my hero?," "Sea you later," and "Have a whaley nice Valentine's Day!"
8th graders also assembled several foam-based pun craft kits: a Valentine's Day hamster craft ("I wheelie like you") and a winter religious craft ("Smitten with Jesus"). Both include word play on similar-sounding words!
