Afteranalyzing the characterization, theme, and irony in O. Henry's classic short story, "Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen," 8th graders sorted physical traits and determined common character traits for its main characters: the Old Gentleman and Stuffy Pete. As a culminating activity in English class, students watched a film adaptation and compared/contrasted it to the original on a Venn Diagram. Then they enjoyed modern and old-fashioned fall snacks - from butternut squash applesauce and sweet potato chips to Oatmeal Creme Pies, cranberry juice, and corn muffins - for a small treat good enough for Stuffy Pete's third Thanksgiving meal! "Gobble until you Wobble" - a contemporary Thanksgiving tagline posted on the chalkboard - modernized and reinforced Stuffy Pete's central conflict in the story to bring the table display together!
In HNOM School's 1st Annual Turkey Bowl, 8th graders played a game of football outside in the school yard against the 7th grade class. Elementary grades arrived to the school yard with cheers and signs to support the teams! After two periods, 8th grade won 26 to 12!
With orange-striped gift wrap and bright orange bows, 8th graders made sure to highlight their Class of 2022 color when presenting and delivering their class T-shirts to their middle school teachers and administrators! Thank you Mrs. Powell, Mr. Sach, Father Regan, Miss Hahl, Mrs. Sanders, and Miss Ciminelli for supporting the Class of 2022!
As a HNOM School tradition, each year's graduating class designs and chooses the color for their class T-shirts and sweatshirts - to be worn throughout the year as their unique gym uniform. This year, the 8th grade chose "safety orange" for the color and the students have embraced the vibrant color with humor, pride, and enthusiasm!
To conclude their TACHS Spirit Week, 8th graders wore colorful outfits and enjoyed a rainbow bagel breakfast - with a side of Skittles! From tie dye shirts to a surprise sunlit rainbow spotted on the classroom floor, the 8th graders were immersed in a fun, color-splattered day to remind them that they would pass the TACHS with "flying colors"! A colorful milkshake plush even became the day's unofficial mascot! With swirls of purple, blue, orange, and pink, the rainbow bagels were an instant hit among the 8th graders! Good luck on the TACHS, 8th grade!
Since the 8th graders design their own special gym uniform T-shirt/sweatshirt every year as a HNOM tradition, each graduating class has a unique color that identifies them throughout the building. This year, the Class of 2022 voted for "safety orange." Therefore, as both a nod to their class T-shirts and one of the most famous butterfly species - the Monarch! - middle school students wore orange today to support the 8th grade during TACHS Spirit Week. To represent their nerves - "the butterflies in their stomachs!" - 8th graders posed with an X-Ray poster spotted with butterfly stickers!
8th graders wore their brightest, most colorful, fanciest, or craziest socks to encourage each other not to get "cold feet" in the week leading up their Catholic high school entrance exam, the TACHS. From penguin designs to mismatched pairs, 8th graders put a lot of thought into their sock choices!
To kick off HNOM's 2nd Annual TACHS Spirit Week, middle school students wore their favorite or silliest cap to support 8th grade as they entered the week of their Catholic high school entrance exam. With every day of this year's TACHS Spirit Week grounded in an idiom about nerves or test-taking, the caps reminded 8th graders that it was time to put on their thinking caps!
