Nursery students in Ms. Lara's class learned about Earth Day and discussed how everyone can take care of our natural home. By bringing in plastic water, soda, and juice bottles, students dipped the ends in paint to create blossoms for a creative flower painting using recycled materials!
In anticipation of Easter, nursery students in Ms. Lara's class enjoyed a variety of traditional spring activities. Students dyed real eggs a variety of colors. Ms. Fischer's first grade class and Ms. Lara's nursery class surprised HNOM's librarian, Mrs. Mikowski, with thank you cards and gifts on "National School Librarian Day"! The nation's "Read Across America" Day is celebrated annually on the March 2nd birthday of children's book author, Dr. Seuss, or Theodor Seuss Geisel. Pre-K students in Mrs. Onorato's class created portraits of the beloved book character, Cat in the Hat! Complete with his iconic red-and-white striped hat and bow-tie, the paper collages also featured hand-drawn faces that showcased happy emotions! Students in Mrs. Casazza's and Mrs. Intranuovo's Pre-K class also celebrated the 1904 birthday of Dr. Seuss. They created tall, striped hats to dress up like the Cat in the Hat! To promote Dental Health Month this February, students from Nursery to Grade 2 gathered for a special presentation by Miss Lynn, who visited HNOM from New Wave Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics. Students learned about trips to the dentist, brushing techniques, and how to keep their teeth clean!
Police officers from the NYS Canine Unit - Mr. Chadwick and Mr. Sabo - led a presentation about the challenges and rewards of being troopers with a furry, four-legged partner! During Catholic Schools Week to celebrate vocations, nursery students were asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Students dressed up in costumes that showcased their future career goals. The challenge revealed many shared interests, since there were a lot of firefighters and health professionals in Ms. Lara's nursery class!
Students in Ms. Lara's nursery class celebrated "Nation Day" during Catholic Schools Week by pasting together red and blue heart collages! Students had a lot of fun with the art project!
With mini beach balls and hula hoops, PlayHooray hosted a "Movement & Music" class for students in Nursery, Pre-K, and Kindergarten. The 30-minute session focused on kinesthetic play that encourages socialization and develops fine and gross motor skills. Our early childhood students had a lot of fun moving to the music! Through HNOM's PTL (Parent-Teacher League), classroom Christmas gifts were delivered by Santa! Each grade received indoor or outdoor games for recess! Nursery students in Ms. Lara's class were excited to open a dinosaur game!
During HNOM's Holiday Spirit Week, nursery students in Ms. Lara's class crafted Rudolph hats to pair with their Christmas sweaters, showcased lots of red-and-green striped socks, and wore Santa and elf hats!
Pre-K students dressed up as angels, Mary, Joseph, the three Magi, and shepherds to perform the story of Jesus' birth in a Nativity pageant entitled, "Thank You, God, for Christmas." The homemade nativity scene featured costumes, a starry backdrop, and cardboard and plush farm animals.
In Mrs. Onorato's Pre-K class, students went on a scavenger hunt around the school building to find gingerbread men and deliver little treats to HNOM's staff, like Mrs. Bagwandeen in the office, Mrs. Mikowski in the library, and Mrs. Baxter in the health office! The kinesthetic activity was based on Jan Brett's picture book, "The Gingerbread Baby." Students also snacked on the ginger treats! Thanks for "baking" spirits bright and spreading some holiday cheer, Pre-K!
After coloring cornucopia placemats, nursery students in Ms. Lara's class enjoyed a little Thanksgiving feast! Sugar pumpkins decorated the tables as students snacked on pretzels and cupcakes iced in autumn colors: red, orange, and yellow!
On today's crisp and sunny autumn morning, students jogged and gobbled around HNOM school for the annual "Turkey Trot"in gym class! Thank you, Mr. Smith, for coordinating the fun event! In Ms. Lara's class, nursery students crafted construction paper turkey hats in anticipation of the outdoor exercise! They also posed for a photo next to the inflatable lawn turkey!
In Mrs. Onorato's Pre-K class, students learned about fire safety before a visit from a real fire truck, which parked in the HNOM schoolyard! The firefighters extended the truck's ladder and showed students all the equipment stored in the truck!
In honor of St. Francis of Assisi, Ms. Lara's nursery class brought in plush and electronic cats and dogs for Father Regan's "Blessing of the Animals."
