    • Science Experiment

In honor of earth day, I am including a science experiment that shows the value of recycling, by turning crayon scraps into a new crayon.

But, I recognize that people are likely running low on many "science" supplies, so here is a link to a variety of earth day themed activities for children,  Hopefully you can find something to do with what you have available.

      https://littlebinsforlittlehands.com/preschool-earth-day-activities-for-science-and-sensory-play/

      Recycling Crayons in the Oven

adding broken crayons to silicone mold to make new crayons

      Supplies:

      • Crayon Scraps
      • Oven or Microwave
      • Mold (I've used cupcake trays with metal inserts to make rainbow crayons the size of a Reece's Peanut Butter Cup)

      Procedure:

      1. ASK: What happens to crayons when you color with them? (They get smaller) What do we usually do when a crayon gets really tiny?  (Throw them out)  When we throw something out, where does it go?  (Garbage/Garbage Dump)  Do you think think there is anything we can do to stop crayons from turning into garbage?  What?  What do we call this? (Recycling!  Explain what recycling is) I wonder if there is a way to recycle them....
      2. Preheat oven to 275 degrees.
      3. ASK: What will happen to the crayon pieces if we put them in the oven?  (They get hot)  Do you think it will change what the crayon pieces look like?  Why?  How?
      4. Peel the paper off used crayons.  Make sure you use tiny pieces (cut them if you have too).
      5. ASK:  Why is it important to take off the paper?  (So the paper doesn't catch on fire)  What phone number do we call if something catches on fire?
      6. Fill each crayon mold (Silicone Candy Mold OR see other options below) with different colors, anything goes! Similar shades will create a nice effect or try color mixing by combining blue and yellow!
      7. ASK: (We know about shades of colors and that mixing certain colors creates a new color.)  What new color does mixing yellow and blue make?  Will adding black to blue make it a darker or lighter shade?  How can we make it a lighter blue?  What is a color we could add?
      8. Place in the oven for 7-8 minutes or until crayons are completely melted.
      9. Remove the mold carefully from the oven and let it cool completely.
      10. ASK: Should we grab the crayons right away?  Why not?  What should we do to stay safe?  Should you ever use the oven without an adult?  Why?
      11. Once cooled, pop out of molds and have fun coloring!

Results: The crayons melt together and when they dry you get a new rainbow crayon to use.

      OTHER CRAYON MELTING TECHNIQUES

      Muffin Tin
You don’t need silicon candy molds to make crayons. Simply spray the muffin tins first with a cooking spray and use them the same way!  Or use metal cupcake

Using Cookie Cutters in the Oven
This is another great alternative to melting crayons in candy molds. Line a baking tray with parchment paper. Lightly spray metal cookie cutters and place them on the tray. Add crayons and pop in the oven!

      Microwave
You will still want to peel the crayons and break into pieces. However, your best bet is to separate by color since you will be doing a melt and pour style of making crayons here.

Place the crayon pieces in paper cups and heat on high in the microwave. Ours took about 5 mins but you may want to start checking around four minutes depending on the microwave.

Then you will pour the melted crayons into your silicone molds! This is when you can combine colors if desired. Place molds in the freezer to speed the cooling process! 30 minutes should do the trick.
